SCIENCE COMMUNICATION
Crossing the Paleontological-Ecological Gap & Conservation Paleobiology Symposium
Zürich, 27 July – 1 August 2025
THE SYMPOSIUM
The CPEG meeting aims to bring palaeontologists and ecologists together to share ideas, data and methods in research areas that are studied by both, but typically independently (e.g., community and population ecology, food web dynamics, extinction mechanisms and conservation). On this occasion, the meeting will be merged with the 3rd Conservation Paleobiology Symposium to promote the application of palaeobiological and ecological records to the conservation, management, and restoration of biodiversity.»

ASSIGNMENT
Designing a key visual that communicates the essence of the joint symposium. The image is being used in a variety of media.
DELIVERABLE
print: science conference poster, website, templates for slide decks, e-mail signature, images and templates for social media posts
CLIENT
Paläontologisches Institut, Universität Zürich, A special thank you goes to Prof. Dr. Catalina Pimiento Hernandez and MSc Kristina Kocáková
IDEATION
The best idea is to try different ideas.

This playful dino is looking to register extra early for the symposium at Zürich University.

Evolution is a step by step process: saurus, human, robot…

Attendees of the conference imagine what kind of animals they would have encountered in Zürich millions of years ago.

The ammonite gets petrified while thinking of the the vast, spiraling time scales paleontologists are talking about.

Paleontology and ecology on the cutting edge to close the knowledge gap.

This depiction of sediments anticipates what we will leave behind.
PROTOTYPING
Selecting ideas and drawing up presentable designs

Step by step towards the uncertain future.

Bridging and crossing the gap between paleontology and ecology.

Full steam backwards in time.
THE FINAL DESIGN
Let the sediments between the past and the future do the talking.
The color contrast between the past, the present, and future was deliberatly chosen to accentuate the ecological aspect. After all, the aim of the symposium is to connect ecologists and paleontologists. The key visual was made in a resolution independent vector graphics. It is a lightweight and flexible to be used online and in print.
