THE PHOCUS SURGICAL SYSTEM
The "Phocus Surgical System" was designed by Aeon Scientific – a start-up from ETH Zurich's Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems. The work of Aeon Scientific focuses on making conventional surgical procedures safer and simpler. The technical groundwork was laid by the team of ETH professor Bradley Nelson, the co-founder of Aeon Scientific. The research into a magnet-controlled surgical system at IRIS began in 2003, before establishing the spin-off in 2010.
3D ANIMATION
The goal of the animation is to visualize the magnetic working principle in the context of a medical application. I used an animated vector field to visualize the changing polarity.

applications in ophthalmology

The robot-controlled surgical system can be used to treat cardiac arrhythmia. The cardiologist uses a joystick to precisely control a catheter through the patient's blood vessel into the heart's chambers. The device controls the magnetic field to steer instruments remotely with high precision inside the human body. This underlying principle can also be used in other areas of medicine to control catheters, guidewires and endoscopes.
